Shudane Hendricks is a versatile and passionate multi-instrumentalist from Harper Woods, Michigan, whose musical journey has been shaped by a fusion of cultural influences and diverse performance experiences. Growing up in a musically rich environment, he explored multiple instruments, including drums, guitar, and keyboard, before ultimately finding his primary voice on the bass. His deep-rooted connection to music stems from his Jamaican heritage, where reggae, soca, and ska played a formative role in his development. Simultaneously, growing up in the heart of Detroit’s music scene exposed him to gospel, funk, jazz, and rock, making him a well-rounded and adaptable musician.
Shudane honed his skills at the University of Michigan, where he pursued a degree in Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation. During his time there, he became deeply involved in the university’s music scene, serving as the principal bassist and ensemble manager for the Campus Jazz Band. This role allowed him to expand his abilities beyond performance, as he worked on preparing and arranging charts, coordinating rehearsals, and managing logistics for rehearsals and performances. These experiences not only strengthened his technical abilities but also helped him develop leadership and organizational skills that would serve him well in his professional career.
Beyond academia, Shudane has built a strong reputation as an accomplished live performer, collaborating with numerous bands across different genres. He is the bassist for UMPH, a high-energy funk group formed by jazz students at the University of Michigan, as well as Pluot, a Japanese alternative rock band with a growing presence in the Ann Arbor and East Lansing music scenes. Additionally, he has played with Universal Xpression, a Caribbean ensemble that specializes in reggae and soca, allowing him to showcase his deep knowledge and connection to the rhythms and traditions of Jamaican music.
In addition to his band work, Shudane has also contributed his talents to various pit orchestras throughout Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor, lending his expertise to theatrical productions that require precision, versatility, and adaptability in a live performance setting. His ability to seamlessly transition between different styles and performance settings has made him a sought-after bassist, capable of bringing a unique voice to every musical project he undertakes.
Over the years, Shudane has played at renowned venues such as The Blind Pig and The Blue Llama, where he has captivated audiences with his expressive playing and dynamic stage presence. In addition to his extensive work as a bassist, Shudane currently serves as the keyboardist for Christian Faith Church in Ypsilanti, where he plays for Sunday services.
